Can a silent phone weaken face-to-face conversation?
Two small experiments reported weaker relationship outcomes around a nearby phone, especially during meaningful talks; later replications and a meta-analysis did not support a reliable mere-presence effect.

A silent phone can feel like a third person at the table. It represents everyone who could interrupt, every message waiting outside the room and every place its owner could direct attention next.
That intuition has become a confident online claim: the mere sight of a phone weakens conversation. The evidence is less settled.
Two small experiments did find lower relationship quality, trust and empathy when a phone sat nearby during conversations between strangers. But later replication attempts did not reproduce a reliable relationship-outcome effect, and a meta-analysis did not find reliable support for phone presence alone.
The clearer distinction is between a phone that is merely there and a phone that someone actually uses.
The original phone was not even in direct view
Andrew Przybylski and Netta Weinstein tested the mere presence idea in two
laboratory experiments first published online in 2012 and issued in 2013.
In the first, 74 participants were paired with strangers. They left their own belongings outside the room and spent ten minutes discussing an interesting event from the previous month.
One condition included a nondescript mobile phone resting on a book on a nearby desk. The control condition used a pocket notebook in the same position. The object was outside the participants’ direct visual field, and debriefing indicated that its placement was unobtrusive.
After the conversation, people in the phone-present condition reported lower relationship quality and less closeness. Those were subjective ratings made after one short encounter. The researchers did not record whether anyone made less eye contact, disclosed less or behaved differently.
This setup is worth remembering because a phone on the table has become the
dominant mental image. The original causal comparison was subtler: phone versus
notebook, nearby but not in direct view.
Meaningful conversation produced the striking result
The second experiment asked 68 participants, arranged in 34 pairs, to have either a casual or meaningful ten-minute conversation. Casual pairs discussed plastic holiday trees. Meaningful pairs discussed the most important events of the previous year.
In the meaningful condition, phone presence predicted lower relationship
quality, trust and perceived empathy. The estimated simple slopes were −0.45
for relationship quality, −0.69 for trust and −0.72 for empathy; all three
were statistically significant.
In casual conversation, none of those phone effects was significant. The
corresponding p values were .63, .80 and .95.
That specificity made the story compelling. A device associated with the wider social world might matter most when two people are trying to disclose something important. But it also made the claim narrower than the headline version: two small samples, strangers, ten minutes, an old nondescript phone and outcomes reported immediately after the exchange.
A larger related replication did not find the same effect
Claire Linares and Anne-Laure Sellier returned to the procedure in 2021. Across two experiments, 356 participants formed 136 groups. A smartphone or notebook sat nearby, and the researchers closely followed the first original experiment’s moderately intimate discussion task. They did not directly repeat the second experiment’s casual-versus-meaningful manipulation. The original room layout was retained for dyads; in triads, one participant faced the object.
The researchers also placed group and individual creativity tasks before the relationship ratings. They identify possible fatigue or contamination from those added tasks as a limitation.
The result changed. Neither experiment found a significant difference in the
original relationship-quality measures. In the first study, those tests were
all above p = .45; in the second, all were above p = .29. The phone did not
reliably reduce creativity either.
This does not prove that a silent phone can never affect an interaction. It does show that the first result was not easy to reproduce under a close procedure with a larger total sample.
A separate 2018 replication also found no significant effect on relationship quality or empathy and no evidence that meaningfulness changed the result. Its setup was materially different: a participant interacted with a trained confederate whose phone was clearly visible on a coffee table.

Presence and phubbing are different exposures
The strongest synthesis in this evidence set separated two questions.
For six mere-presence studies with 601 participants, the pooled correlation was
r = −.20 and not statistically significant. A reliability-weighted estimate
was r = −.17 and also nonsignificant. With only six studies, statistical power
was low, so this is uncertainty rather than proof of no effect.
For 37 studies of active phone use or phubbing—using a phone while another
person is present—the pattern was clearer. Across 7,515 participants, the pooled
correlation was r = −.35; the reliability-weighted estimate was r = −.29.
Those studies varied. Some were experiments; others were surveys, diaries or observations. They covered strangers, friends, partners, coworkers and family. The pooled result therefore does not mean every glance at a useful screen harms every interaction.
It does mean that taking attention away from a person is a different act from leaving a silent object nearby. One is an environmental cue. The other can also be a behavioral message: something else has priority now.
Real-world observations cannot settle cause on their own
A frequently cited coffee-shop study observed 100 pairs during ten-minute conversations. Pairs with a visible or used mobile device rated the interaction and their partner’s empathy lower.
The setting was naturalistic, but phone presence was not randomly assigned. Someone might reach for a phone because a conversation is already weak. A different relationship, mood or norm could influence both device behavior and the later rating.
That study is useful evidence that phones and conversation quality travel together in real settings. It cannot tell us which one moved first.
The practical rule is about attention, not superstition
The evidence does not justify treating every visible phone as a proven social toxin. It does justify making attention explicit when the conversation matters.
- Agree whether interruptions are acceptable before a serious discussion.
- Put the device away when its visibility creates uncertainty for either person.
- Distinguish a shared use—showing a photo, checking a fact, solving something together—from leaving the other person outside the action.
- Notice actual divided attention before blaming the object alone.
These are low-cost conversation norms, not effects tested as interventions in the cited studies. The evidence has not shown that moving a silent phone out of sight will reliably improve trust, empathy or relationship quality.

The lifescore take
A cautious editorial inference is that social signals matter most when their meaning is shared. A phone can signal availability to a wider world, but these studies do not establish that the signal alone reliably damages connection. The negative association is more consistent for active use or phubbing than for mere presence. When attention visibly moves to the device, that is also a different exposure from the silent object tested in the original experiments. The next question reverses the direction of the cue: **can a visible object help strangers start a conversation instead of disrupting one?**
