Do shared experiences feel more intense?
The original chocolate experiments found more-extreme evaluations but no difference in direct intensity; the same-room condition of a 2016 spatial-distance experiment found a higher direct-intensity rating, while minimal video studies found no average emotional or enjoyment effect.

A silent companion can change how a person evaluates an otherwise unchanged stimulus. That is not quite the same as making it feel more intense.
That is the striking result behind the idea that shared experiences are amplified. In two Yale experiments, the chocolate given to the participant never changed. What changed was whether she believed a second person was tasting the same kind of chocolate at the same moment. Pleasant chocolate was rated better in that condition. Bitter chocolate was rated worse.
The direct answer needs one measurement distinction. In both original experiments, ratings of how intense the chocolate tasted did not differ between conditions. What moved was evaluative extremity: liking and flavor for pleasant chocolate, and liking for bitter chocolate. One 2016 same-room follow-up did find a direct intensity difference. Several later minimal shared-video experiments found no average emotional lift at all.
The original test changed the companion, not the chocolate
The 2014 study recruited 45 female Yale undergraduates across two experiments. Each participant sat beside a confederate who appeared to be another participant. They were told not to communicate and recorded their ratings privately.
In one condition, the participant believed both people were tasting the same kind of chocolate at the same time. In the other, she tasted chocolate while the confederate looked at artwork or product images. The participant did not know that the two samples she tasted within an experiment came from the same bar. In the bitter experiment, the confederate secretly received pleasant chocolate rather than the participant’s 90% dark chocolate.
That within-person design matters. Each participant supplied her own shared and unshared comparison. The stimulus was held constant while the other person’s activity changed.

The chocolate ratings shown in the table used 0-to-10 scales. The
pleasant-chocolate liking difference had an effect size of d = 0.56; the
flavor difference was d = 0.54. The bitter-chocolate difference was smaller
at d = 0.34. Direct intensity ratings did not differ by condition in either
experiment.
Sharing did not simply make the moment nicer
The first experiment alone had two possible readings. Perhaps the other person amplified the taste. Or perhaps being together created a pleasant mood that made any chocolate seem better.
The bitter condition separated those accounts. If company merely added pleasantness, bitter chocolate should have become easier to like. It moved in the opposite direction. Participants liked it less when the confederate was apparently eating the same bitter chocolate.
That reversal is the most useful result. It turns a comforting slogan—things are better together—into a narrower mechanism. Sharing may increase the psychological weight of a stimulus rather than improve its valence.
The experiment did not show that participants consciously copied another person. The confederate was stoic, communication was blocked and ratings were private. In the bitter condition, the confederate secretly ate pleasant chocolate and recorded the highest possible ratings, further reducing the chance that the participant was matching visible discomfort.
The proposed mechanism remained unproved
The authors proposed two linked possibilities. A shared stimulus may receive more attention, and a participant may think more about the mind of the person sharing it.
The second experiment produced suggestive pieces, but not a completed causal chain. Participants reported being more on the same wavelength with the confederate in the shared condition. Their reported absorption was higher in the raw means but not statistically significant. Thinking about the confederate was only marginally different. Neither measure mediated the taste rating.
So attention and mentalizing are explanations to test, not findings that close the case. The experiment established a difference in evaluation under its conditions. It did not establish why that difference occurred.
Proximity can switch the effect on or off
A 2016 follow-up directly tested the role of psychological distance. Forty-four women completed a social-distance experiment. Half remained strangers to the confederate; half spent ten minutes becoming acquainted before tasting.
The acquainted participants enjoyed the chocolate more when the confederate shared it. The strangers did not show that shared-versus-unshared difference. An exploratory 21-person alone group also suggested that the stronger result came from amplification in the acquainted shared condition, not from simply devaluing an unshared condition.
A second experiment with 40 students changed spatial distance. Everyone first
became acquainted. Half then tasted in the same room; half knew the confederate
was participating simultaneously from a room across the hall. Chocolate
enjoyment rose in the shared condition only when the two people were in the
same room. This time, the direct intensity rating did too: 7.13 shared versus
5.48 unshared in the same room (p=.003, d=.76), but 6.75 versus 6.60
across rooms (p=.775). The distance-by-sharing interaction was p=.049.

This makes shared a demanding category. Simultaneous exposure is not always
enough. The other person may need to feel psychologically present, not merely
exist somewhere in the protocol.
A larger set of null experiments redraws the boundary
In 2019, another research team reported seven experiments across Studies 1 and 2, four hedonic tests and three choice tests. The main text also contained two scenario studies, and the supplement added two more Study 1 variants. Participants watched videos in shared or solo conditions across friends, newly acquainted strangers, confederates, online settings and several emotional tones.
The emotional effects centered near zero. In one 41-person experiment, friends
in separate rooms did not rate shared videos as more enjoyable. In another,
113 analyzable participants who had met in the lab did not report greater
enjoyment when watching the same videos side by side. Across the reported
minimal shared-experience tests, the average standardized emotional effect was
approximately d = -0.014.
Yet participants still chose shared viewing frequently, even when it cost them small amounts of money. The authors’ distinction was between wanting and liking: people may seek a shared experience for connection without receiving an immediate hedonic boost from the content itself.
These null results do not erase the chocolate experiments. The stimuli, partners, condition cues and degree of psychological presence differed. They do prevent a universal claim. A shared experience can be amplified; shared experience is not an automatic amplifier.

The practical implication is not to manufacture intensity by adding an audience. It is to notice that the social frame belongs inside the experience. Who is present, how close they feel, whether they share attention and whether the setting permits genuine connection may all change the result.

The lifescore take
Experience is not produced by the stimulus alone. The same taste, image or moment can acquire a different evaluative weight when a person believes someone nearby is attending to it too. But the strongest version of the claim fails. The original 45-person result was an evaluative shift, not a change in its direct intensity item. Follow-up work found direct intensity only in one same-room condition and showed that social and spatial proximity moderated other evaluations, while broader minimal video tests often found no emotional change. The better question is therefore not simply whether an experience is shared. It is whether the other person is psychologically present enough to become part of that experience.
